Perform a Rockwell Automation Compare

Perform a compare to see the differences between two files.
Prerequisites
  • Be sure you have specified a comparison tool to use for the type of files you want to compare.
  • If one of the items you want to compare is in FactoryTalk AssetCentre Archive, you must have
    Get
    permission to perform the comparison.
  • If one of the items you want to compare is in FactoryTalk AssetCentre Archive, you must be logged in to FactoryTalk.
To perform a Rockwell Automation Compare
  1. If comparing to an item on your computer, open My Computer or Windows Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the first item you want to compare. For items stored in FactoryTalk AssetCentre Archive, you can select the item:
    • in the asset tree. (In this case the pinned version is used or, if no version is pinned, then the latest version is used.)
    • in Archive in the
      History
      or
      Labels
tab. (In this case you select the version to use.)
    • in
Archive in the right pane of the
      Content
tab. (In this case you select the version to use.)
  3. Right-click the item and click
Select Left item for RA Compare
    (where
    item
is File or Folder depending on what type of item you have selected).
  4. Navigate to the second item.
  5. Right-click the second item and select
    RA Compare to firstselectionname
. (This option is only available after you have selected the first item. If you click
Select Left File for RA Compare
again, this item will be used instead of the one previously selected. You will need to select another item to compare.)
  6. If multiple compare engines are configured for the type of item being compared, choose the compare engine configuration from the
    Select Compare Engine
    dialog box.
Be aware that the system updates compare engine configurations on client computers once a day. If someone has updated configurations using another client computer less than 24 hours ago, those configurations changes will not be available to you. To force an immediate update, open
    Tools
    >
    Options
    ,
    Compare Engines
    .
  7. If you are comparing Siemens S5 and S7 Controller (STEP7) files (and have not changed the default compare engine for these), set compare options for Siemens S5 Controller and S7 Controller (STEP7).
  8. For comparisons pertaining to Allen-Bradley PLC-5 Controllers, Allen-Bradley SLC 500 Controllers, Allen-Bradley MicroLogix Controllers, Rockwell Automation drives, Allen-Bradley PanelView Plus devices, Allen-Bradley MobileView devices, Asset Inventory, Allen-Bradley Stratix Switch, and FactoryTalk View Site Edition, the Rockwell Automation Compare Viewer is shown. Use this to set compare options for the device if necessary and to view the results of the comparison.
  9. When viewing results for other file types, refer to the documentation for your comparison tool. For Windows folders, FactoryTalk AssetCentre provides results.
