Add a device

Use the
Communication Setup
 editor to add a device.
To add a device
  1. From the
    Application
    tab, double-click the
    Communication Setup
     editor, right-click the driver or network you wish to add a device to, and click
    Add Device
    .
    TIP:
    You cannot add a device under remote input/output and DeviceNet. If a yellow question mark (Yellow question mark) shows on the communications tree, it indicates that an image is not available for the device you selected.
  2. In the
    Add Device Selection
     dialog box, do one of the following:
    1. Select a hardware device from the
      Available Devices
      list, and click
      OK
      When adding a device to your configuration, select the most recent revision of that device. To quickly view all of the active devices on a network, select that network on the
      Communication Setup
      editor.
      If the device you want to add is connected through a Prosoft AN-X2-AB-DHRIO device, select the device from the
      Prosoft AN-X2-AB-DHRIO connected PCCC devices
       folder. Otherwise the device may fail to communicate with
      FactoryTalk Linx
      .
      TIP:
      If the Available Devices list in the Add Device Selection dialog box does not contain the device which you want to add, you can register the device description file of the device in the Device Description File Installation Tool. This creates the device description file required in the step below.
    2. Select
      GenericDevice
      ,
      Generic Device From EDS File
      . Type the device description file name in the EDS File field, and click
      OK
      .
      A 16-digit hexadecimal number, or a 16-digit hexadecimal number plus the files extension (.eds or .xml), is an acceptable device description file name. For example, both 004D000C00730200 and 004D000C00730200.eds are valid device description file names.
      TIP:
      After the device description file registration, browse the communications tree once more in the
      Communication Setup
       editor. This retrieves the latest
      Available Devices
       list in the
      Add Device Selection
       dialog box. Otherwise, the newly registered hardware devices may not show in the
      Available Devices
       list when adding a device in the
      FactoryTalk View Studio
       or
      FactoryTalk Administration Console
      .
  3. On the
    Device Properties
     dialog box, enter the required information, and click
    OK
    . The device is added under the driver or network selected in Step 1.
