Add a Generic Device from device description file

In the
Add Device Selection
dialog box, if a hardware device is not listed in the
Available Devices
, you can add it as a
GenericDevice, Generic Device From EDS File
with the device's device description file. You must have a valid and complete device description file (*.eds or *.xml) of the hardware device which you want to add.
Prerequisites
  • Follow the steps to register device description files in the Device Description File Installation Tool. This creates the device description file required to add a generic device.
To add a generic device from device description file
  1. In the
    Add Device Selection
    dialog box, select
GenericDevice, Generic Device From EDS File
    .
  2. In the
    EDS File
field, enter the name of the device description file or click
    Browse
to locate the file, and click
    OK
    .
  3. Enter the information required on the
    Device Properties
    dialog box, and then click
    OK
    .
    TIP:
    Some hardware devices, such as
    Micro800
series devices, require a patch (or a new release) of
    FactoryTalk Linx
that adds support for the new hardware devices. This kind of device cannot communicate with
    FactoryTalk Linx
by merely registering the devices' device description files. If the hardware device cannot communicate with
    FactoryTalk Linx
after completing the steps above, contact Rockwell Automation Technical Support.
