Siemens S7 Controller (STEP7) operation properties for disaster recovery

Following are all possible settings for disaster recovery schedules for Siemens S7 Controller (STEP7) assets.
These settings are used for two purposes:
  • Specify default disaster recovery schedule settings for Siemens S7 Controllers (STEP7) in
    Tools
    >
    Options
    .
  • Specify the settings of a particular Siemens S7 Controller (STEP7) asset in an existing schedule on the
    Schedules
tab. Changes to the settings within a schedule override the default settings for that instance.
Unless noted otherwise, each setting applies to backup schedules and backup and compare schedules.
Siemens S7 Controller (STEP7) password issue with backups
If the password in the Siemens S7 Controller (STEP7) is different than the password in the configuration data binder, the backup operation cannot complete. To avoid this, when you change the password in your S7 editor, be sure to download it to the controller and check the configuration data binder back in.
(Backup and compare schedules only) Event Settings
  • Backup Compare Partner
(Only available when editing an existing schedule, not when setting defaults.) Specify the version of the backup data binder to compare to the controller files.
  • Configuration Data Compare Partner
(Only available when editing an existing schedule, not when setting defaults.) For Siemens S7 Controller (STEP7) devices, the configuration data is not compared during a backup and compare operation unless specified. Set the software to compare to configuration data and specify the version of the configuration data binder to compare to the device files.
  • Create New Backup Version
    Set to
    Always
to create a backup version even if it is exactly the same as the last compared backup version. This is the default setting.
    Set to
    On Differences Found
to create a backup version only if differences are found. If the existing backup is the same as the information in the controller aside from excluded data blocks, then no backup is saved.
Asset-specific properties
  • Block Options
When you set up the binder for the Siemens S7 Controller (STEP7), you had the opportunity to exclude files that you did not want included in the binder. Here you can exclude blocks of the Siemens S7 Controller (STEP7) program that you do not want included in a backup or a backup and compare operation.
    Click in the
    Block Options
field and then click browse_button_small. Fill in the
    Block Options
    dialog box.
  • (Backup and compare schedules only) Compare Data Blocks by Length And Structure
    Set to
    True
to compare the length and structure (data type) of the data blocks. This comparison ensures that important changes to the length and structure of blocks, such as changing the structure of a value, or deleting a value, are detected even if the data block is excluded from the compare. It also detects if a whole data block is added or removed. This setting detects content changes, changes to the length and structure.
    Set to
    False
to compare only the content (values) of the data blocks, but not the length and structure.
    Unexpected comparison results
: If you manually change an initial value for a parameter in a data block using your editing software for the Siemens S7 Controller (STEP7), it will register as a change in length and structure. Even if you use
    Block Options
to exclude the data block, a change in length and structure is detected during a comparison if
Compare Data Blocks by Length and Structure
    is set to
    True
    .
Also, if you manually change an initial value for a parameter in a data block, the connection between the address and the symbolic name is lost. Only the address can be shown and a backup and compare operation will report differences. The symbolic names are still available in the project in the Configuration Data binder.
Email notification
You can type email recipients' addresses separated by semicolons (;) or select addresses from the FactoryTalk AssetCentre Address Book. To select addresses from the Address Book, click in the field, and then click browse_button_small. Complete the
Contacts and Groups
dialog box.
An email message will be sent to only one of these lists. For example, if differences are found when a backup and compare schedule runs, an email is sent to those on the
Event Compare Differences Detected
list. No email is sent to those on the
Event Completed
list.
  • (Backup and compare schedules only) Event Compare Differences Detected
The email addresses separated by semicolons (;) to which notification will be sent if the compare finds differences between the specified backup data or configuration data version and the data on the physical device.
  • Event Completed
The email addresses separated by semicolons (;) to which notification will be sent when the operation completes for the asset. If a backup and compare schedule completes without differences, an email is sent to this list. If it completes with differences, an email is sent to the
    Event Compare Differences Detected
    list, not this list.
  • Event Failed
The email addresses separated by semicolons (;) to which notification will be sent when the operation fails.
(Backup and compare schedules only) Attach report to email
  • Event Completed Differences Detected
    This defaults to
    True
to attach a report of differences to the email if the backup and compare schedule finds differences between the specified backup data or configuration data version and the data on the physical device. Select
    False
to send an email without an attached report.
