Set binder key file for Siemens S7 Controllers (STEP7) to use file associations

Use the
Options: File Associations
dialog box to have a designated software product open file with a specific extension. For Siemens S7 Controllers (STEP7), FactoryTalk AssetCentre uses a binder to store configuration files. When using file associations for a Siemens S7 program file, a key filemust be set correctly for the binder so that the software program associated with that file type can open that key file for the binder.
For Siemens S7 program files, FactoryTalkAssetCentre includes a tool thatfinds and opens the editing software for S7P files. This tool comesset up in the
File Associations
dialog box, so there is no need to set file associations for these file types.
For other type of program files to use file associations, you also need to make sure that a key file is set correctly for the binder. Associating a file type with a program must also be set in
Tools
>
Options
>
File Associations

To set a key file for a new binder
  1. If you are not in Design mode, select design mode.
  2. Drag a Siemens S7 Controllers (STEP7) asset from the Asset Catalog to add it to the Asset View or double-click a Siemens S7 Controllers (STEP7) asset in the asset tree.
  3. Select anywhere within the
    Configuration Data
    field, and then select browse.
  4. In the left pane of the
    Configuration Data Browser
    dialog box, select the Siemens S7 Controllers (STEP7) asset, and then select
    Add
    .
  5. On
    Add Binder
    :
    1. Enter the
      Name
      and
      Description
      fields as needed.
    2. Select
      Browse
      to specify a source folder, and then select
      OK
      .
    3. Expand the specified folder in the
      Content
      section,
      find the S7P file, and then select
      Set
      to set that file as a key file.
    4. Select
      OK
      .
  6. In the right pane of the
    Configuration Data Browser
    dialog box, select the new binder.
  7. Select the S7 program to use for disaster recovery operations. More than one S7 program may be included in the binder. However, only one S7 project can be included in the binder. You cannot select a program if more than one project is in the binder.
    1. Select the
      Program Refresh
      button if it is available to update the binder with any program changes.
    2. In the
      Program
      list, select the S7 program.
  8. Select
    OK
    .
  9. Edit other properties as needed, and then select
    OK
    .
  10. (optional) Open the binder to get a local copy of the key file or check it out for editing.
    • In the asset tree, right-click the binder, and then select
      Open
      .
    • Select
      View > Archive
      , and then select the binder in the asset tree. At the top of the Archive tab, select the filename link.
To set a key file for an existing binder
  1. If you are not in Design mode, select design mode.
  2. Expand the Siemens S7 Controllers (STEP7) asset in the asset tree, and then select the binder that you want to edit.
  3. Right-click the binder, and then select
    Check Out
    .
  4. On
    Check Out
    , keep the default settings and enter the comments, and then select
    OK
    .
  5. Double-click binder to open binder properties.
  6. Expand the specified folder in the
    Content
    section,
    find the S7P file, and then select
    Set
    to set that file as a key file.
    TIP:
    Make sure that the S7P file is stored in the specified location.
  7. Select
    OK
    .
  8. (optional) Open the binder to get a local copy of the key file or check it out for editing.
    • In the asset tree, right-click the binder, and then select
      Open
      .
    • Select
      View > Archive
      and select the binder in the asset tree. At the top of the Archive tab, select the filename link.
