About the Asset View

The asset tree (shown in the Asset View) is a user-created representation of your plant including all the assets (anything from a device to a program to a procedure document) that you want to control, back up, or monitor. Everything that you do in FactoryTalk AssetCentre begins with an asset.
With the Asset View, you can create your asset tree and to add, delete, change security settings for, and modify properties of assets. You can also use the Asset View to select assets on which you want to perform operations, like checking a file in or out of source control.
Key information:
  • The Asset View has a Design mode used to edit the asset tree. Most day-to-day use of FactoryTalk AssetCentre does not take place in Design mode. With Design mode off you can do anything but edit the asset tree; you can view logs, create and run schedules, use the
    Archive
tool for version control, and so on. Design mode is only used when creating or making changes to the asset tree.
  • Assets generally have files associated with them. It is these files that are put under version control in Archive. Generally when you add a device, such as a
    PLC-5®
, to the tree, you also add a file associated with that device. This file is used in disaster recovery to schedule a compare operation or a backup. In the case of a PLC-5, this would be an .x5 or .rsp file.
