Step 6: Add assets

Assets are the heart of FactoryTalk AssetCentre. Anything you want the FactoryTalk AssetCentre system to manage must be included in the asset tree. On first use, all assets to be monitored must be added to the asset tree. It's preferred that the FactoryTalk AssetCentre client computer is connected to the devices via a network, and you automatically acquire device information by browsing for the device.
If you add containers to your tree first, and set security for the containers, then assets you add within those containers will inherit the security settings of the container. This will save you time in setting security for your assets.
To add an asset to the tree you must have
Switch to Design mode
permission.
You must also have the following permissions for the container into which you want to add an asset:
  • Create Children
  • Read
  • Write
To add an asset to the tree
  1. Click the
    Design
button design_mode_button to enter Design mode.
  2. If your asset tree is empty, you may first want to organize your asset tree with a useful representation of your plant.
  3. Click an asset in the Asset Catalog and drag it to the desired location in the tree.
  4. Fill out the information for the asset and click
    OK
    .
Assets (with the exception of File and Folder Item assets) are added to the tree as soon as the
    Add
window for the asset opens. If you click
    Cancel
, any changes made to the properties will not be saved, but the asset will still be added to the tree.
  5. Be sure to set security permissions for the asset. When initially added, an asset inherits the security settings of the container in which it is placed (and a container inherits the security settings of the container in which it is placed). Take advantage of this inheritance by setting security for a container before placing assets inside that container.
