About the working folder
To edit a file or binder stored in the Archive database, you must place a copy of the file or binder on your local hard drive. The location on your hard drive is called a working folder. Without a working folder, you cannot open or edit files or binders in the Archive database.
FactoryTalk AssetCentre has two types of working folders:
- System working folder. The location where images of files and binders will be stored when you check them out for editing or get a read-only copy. When the system working folder is set, this working folder applies to all file, binders in the asset and all FactoryTalk AssetCentre users. For example, if you set a system working folder located atC:\BOTTLING PLANTfor an asset calledEast Conveyor, then when a user gets or checks out theEast Conveyorasset, the pathC:\BOTTLING PLANTis created on that user's local computer and will contain allEast Conveyorasset's files.FactoryTalk AssetCentre also supports to set system working folder with the environment variable%USERPROFILE%. For example, if you set the system folder as%USERPROFILE%\Backup, and then when a user gets or checks out the assets, theBackupfolder will be created under the user’s profile folder (A typical path isC:\Users\Username) on that user's local computer and will contain all assets’ files. Each asset can only have one system working folder. Any user with Configure System Archive Working folders permission can set a system working folder for an asset.
- Personal working folder.A working folder that overrides the system working folder for the logged in user. When you set a personal working folder in Archive, that folder is created on your computer and remains yourpersonal working folder for an asset's files and binders. Other users use the system working folder until they set their own personal working folder. You must set personal working folders on each computer on which you want to use them.TIP:When you check out, check in, or get files or binders, you have the option of overriding the current working folder with a temporary location.
