Archive frequently asked questions
This topic lists some frequently asked questions.
How do I place a file into Archive?
Actually, you don't place files directly into Archive, you place them in the FactoryTalk AssetCentre asset tree. While devices that you add to the tree are not protected by version control, you can backup and protect the files associated with those devices using Archive. For example, if you add an Allen-Bradley PLC-5 Controller to the asset tree, that asset is not protected in Archive. However, if you add the ladder logic program file associated with the asset to the tree as well, that file is backed up and protected in Archive.
Can I view or open a file from the Archive database without retrieving it to my computer?
No, you must perform a Get or a Check Out to view the contents of any file stored in Archive. Performing a Get or Check Out places the file in a working folder on your computer so that you can open and view the file.
What does Get local copy do when I check out a file?
This option checks out the file from the Archive database and places it in your working folder; any version of the file in your current working folder will be overwritten by the version checked out from the Archive database. Deselect this option to preserve the file version in your current working folder.
This is useful when you've performed a Get to retrieve a writable version of the file to your current working folder and now want to back up changes you make to that file in Archive. Deselecting this option allows you to continue editing the version in your current working folder and back up those changes in Archive the next time you check in the file.
Can I delete interim versions of a file, but still keep the file in the database?
To remove files that you no longer need from the Archive database, run the
FactoryTalk AssetCentre Archive Cleanup Wizard
. The Archive Cleanup Wizard will not remove the first or last version of any file.Another way to delete previous versions of a file is to store the latest version only. This method, which should be used with care because the process is automatic, removes previous versions of the file from the database the next time you check in changes to the file.
Can I search for a file in Archive?
No, you cannot search for a file in Archive. You can search only for log records.
