Add an OPC DA data server

Add an
OPC
DA data server to an application or area to create a link between a hardware device containing tags and the
FactoryTalk Directory
.
For example, after adding a data server that points to an
OPC
DA server, all of the tags from configured processors available to that server immediately become available to every other participant in the application, including
FactoryTalk View
,
FactoryTalk Transaction Manager
,
FactoryTalk Alarms and Events
, and
FactoryTalk Linx
.
Prerequisites
Adding an
OPC
DA server requires these permissions for the application or area:
  • Common > Create Children
  • Common > Write
  • Common > Read
To add an
OPC
DA data server
  1. In
    FactoryTalk Administration Console
    Explorer
    , expand the application tree.
  2. Right-click the application or area, point to
    Add New Server
    , and then select
    OPC
    DA Data Server
    .
  3. In
    General Properties
, name the data server, identify the computer where the
    OPC
DA data server resides, and select
    Apply
    .
  4. (optional)
    On the
    Redundancy
tab, set up options for a secondary server, should the primary data server fail and select
    Apply
    .
    The
    Redundancy
tab does not display when logged into the local
    FactoryTalk Directory
    .
  5. (optional) On the
    Advanced
    tab, select
Include extended information in the server cache file
to include all possible data server tag information in the cache file. Including extended information increases the time to create and synchronize the cache.
  6. (optional) Select
    Create Cache
to create a cache file of the data server's tags to allow browsing when the server is not available.
  7. When finished, select
    OK
    to close the dialog box.
    TIP:
When setting up a DDE or
    OPC
    DA Topic in
    RSLinx Classic
, specify a symbols file to use an offline copy of the tags in the controller when the controller is unavailable.
