Add a redundant server

Set up redundancy for a server to provide a secondary server to take over when the primary server becomes unavailable.
When setting up a server for redundancy, keep these points in mind:
  • The secondary server cannot be hosted on the same computer as the primary server.
  • Both the primary and secondary servers must be configured identically.
  • When changing the redundancy setting (from non-redundant to redundant or vice-versa), for the changes to take effect you must:
    • Restart the computers hosting the redundant pair
    • Restart the computer hosting the
      FactoryTalk
      network directory server
When logged into the
FactoryTalk
network directory, set up a redundant server in any of the following:
  • FactoryTalk Linx
    Server Properties
  • OPC
    DA Data Server Properties
  • Tag Alarm and Event Server Properties
  • FactoryTalk Linx
    OPC UA Connector Properties
  • FactoryTalk
    Batch Server Properties
To set up redundancy for an HMI Server, use
FactoryTalk View Studio
. Refer to the online Help for
FactoryTalk View Studio
. To set up redundancy for other server in
FactoryTalk Administration Console
or
FactoryTalk View Studio
. The methods to set redundancy for different servers are similar. The
FactoryTalk Linx
OPC UA Connector redundancy is configured independently of the
FactoryTalk
platform. The
FactoryTalk Batch
Server redundancy is configured on the
FactoryTalk Batch
Services Properties
dialog >
Secondary Server
tab. The following is an example to set up redundancy for a
FactoryTalk Linx
server.
To set up redundancy for a
FactoryTalk Linx
server
  1. In
    FactoryTalk Administration Console
    Explorer
, expand the application tree until the
    FactoryTalk Linx
server is visible, right-click the server, and then select
    Properties
    .
  2. On the
    Redundancy
    tab select
Provide redundancy using a secondary server
    .
  3. In
    Computer hosting the server
, type the name of a computer where the secondary server will run, or use
    Browse
to locate and select a computer.
  4. Select a switch back option. In
    FactoryTalk Linx
    Properties,
this is referred to as a switchover option. Choose either:
    • Continue using the secondary server, even when the primary server becomes available again.
Choose this option to manually control the switch over from the secondary server to the primary server.
    • Switch over to the primary server when it becomes available again.
Choose this option to make the primary server become active as soon as it is ready.
  5. Select
    Apply
to save the secondary server information, and then select
    OK
    .
