About session expiration

FactoryTalk ViewPoint
uses session expiration to automatically release licenses in case a user has unexpectedly disconnected or is away for an extended period of time.
A session expires when:
  • The web browser does not respond to a status ping within the license timeout period.
  • The user does not change or refresh the display within the inactivity timeout period.
When a session expires, the web browser displays "Session has expired". To reconnect to the
FactoryTalk ViewPoint
server, the user must refresh the web page and sign in again.
Status Pings and License Timeout
By default, the
FactoryTalk ViewPoint
client sends a status ping to the web server once every 10 seconds. If the web server does not receive the status ping within the license timeout period, the session is ended. The default license timeout period is 30 seconds. The license timeout period can be customized using the
FactoryTalk ViewPoint Administration
console.
Common causes of license timeouts are network failure, unexpected power loss, or an application crash.
Inactivity Timeout
By default, the
FactoryTalk ViewPoint
server has an inactivity timeout of 20 minutes. If a user does not change or refresh a display within the inactivity timeout, the session expires.
