User roles and access

FactoryTalk® Design Studio
uses Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) to manage what users can do. User access to functions and capabilities is based on roles, and each role includes a set of permissions that allow users to perform specific tasks.
Only administrators in an organization can manage user roles. Users can be assigned multiple roles, but only one role can be set as the default.
FactoryTalk Design Studio
provides the following predefined roles:
  • Guest
  • Engineer (default)
  • Safety Engineer
IMPORTANT: You must have the Safety Engineer role to access safety tools and functions or change any safety content in
    FactoryTalk Design Studio
. Validation errors occur if an unauthorized user attempts to change safety content. You cannot commit the project or deploy any applications to any controllers when unauthorized safety changes are present.
  • Administrator
TIP: Permissions for predefined roles are read-only and cannot be changed. When you view a predefined role, all permission categories are visible, but only permitted permissions are selected. Unavailable permissions indicate tasks that users with that role cannot perform.
FactoryTalk Design Studio
also allows you to create custom roles. Custom roles allow organizations greater control over user permissions. You can create up to 10 custom roles per organization.
