Options on the Display tab

The following table shows the options on the
Display
tab.
Options
Descriptions
Chart display options
Time format
Determines whether the trend shows time in
24-hour
format, or in
12-hour (AM/PM)
format.
Select
Use system time setting
to use the date format specified in the
Regional Options
dialog box of the Windows Control Panel.
This setting affects every time display in the trend.
Chart radix
Determines the number base (
Decimal
,
Hexadecimal
,
Octal
, or
Show exponent
) used to show numeric values on the chart.
This setting affects numbers on the y-axis, current value legend, value bar, and tooltips, and the x-axis if
XY plot
is selected. If the number of decimal places on the
Y-Axis
tab is set to anything other than zero, numbers cannot be accurately converted to octal, or hexadecimal.
Data point connection
Determines whether data points on the chart are connected with a line.
  • Connect points -
Shows data points connected with a line.
  • Show disconnects -
Plot lines are disconnected between the start, and end of a discontinuity in data. A discontinuity in data indicates a communication error, or a break in a model’s data logging.
  • Show only markers -
A marker is shown for each data point. Lines do not connect the data points, so the chart shows only those pens with assigned markers. Any pen without an assigned marker does not show on the chart.
Display milliseconds
Determines whether the time stamps shown at the bottom of the chart on the x-axis legend include milliseconds.
Display value bar
Determines whether a value bar is shown on the chart. Unless your chart style is XY-Plot, you can move the value bar by clicking anywhere in the chart. When you click the chart, the value bar moves to the nearest data point. To make showing and hiding the value bar available from the context menu, click select option on the
Runtime
tab.
A value bar includes:
  • a vertical line through the chart
  • a box that lists the values of each pen at the time indicated by the vertical line. A tilde (~) appears after a value when the value is an approximation. An approximation occurs when there is no value for the given pen at the exact time stamp of the value bar.
  • the date and time indicated by the vertical line, shown at the top of the chart
Background color
Sets the background color for the chart. The default color is black.
To change the color, click the color square and then select a color from the palette.
If you want the background to have a gradient look, select the
Use gradient style
check box. In this case, clicking the color square opens the
Gradient Fill
dialog box. All other background areas in the control use
FactoryTalk View
ambient color setting.
Text color
Sets the text color for the chart.
To change the color, click the color square and then select a color from the palette.
Font...
Allows you to change the type style used on the runtime chart display.
Current value legend
The options in this group determine which types of pen information show in a current value legend. By default, the current value legend is shown to the right of the trend chart. However, if the line legend is set to appear at the bottom of the trend chart, the current value legend is shown as part of the line legend.
Display pen values
Determines whether pen values show in a current value legend.
Display time
Determines whether the time when data was last collected shows above the pen values in a current value legend.
Display pen icons
Determines whether pen icons show in a current value legend to the right of the trend chart. Pen icons indicate the last read value of each pen. Pen icons move to show the current value, even if the chart is not scrolling, so pen icons may not appear at the end of a line.
Line legend
The options in this group determine which types of trend line information show in a line legend.
Display line legend
Determines whether to show a legend for each trend line.
Position
Determines whether the line legend is shown to the left, or at the bottom of the chart.
Max viewable
Sets the maximum number of pens (from 1 through 100) to show in the line legend. This option only applies when the line legend is set to appear at the bottom of the trend chart.
Display min/max values
Determines whether to show the minimum, and maximum values for each pen as part of the legend for each trend line.
Pen caption
Determines the type of pen caption that shows in the line legend.
  • Long tag name -
Shows the full tag name for each pen.
  • Short tag name -
Shows the last part of the tag name.
  • Description -
Shows the tag description set up on the
    Pens
    tab.
Maximum pen caption length
Determines the maximum number of characters (up to 80) that can appear in the pen caption portion of the line legend.
Scrolling
Allow scrolling
Determines whether to continually update the chart with new data at runtime.
If you clear the
Allow Scrolling
check box, data is not plotted on the trend. Instead, the data buffer fills with trend data until the buffer limit is reached. The chart will not update until the operator toggles the scroll mode manually using the
Pause
button.
Scroll mode
If you allow the chart to scroll and update with new data at runtime, specify a scroll mode:
  • Continuous scroll
    – The chart scrolls from the right to the left for each new data reading.
  • Half Screen scroll
    – The chart scrolls half a screen at a time. The chart scrolls from left to right, starting at the center of the chart. When the pens reach the right side of the chart, the chart scrolls half a screen and the pens plot values again, starting in the center of the chart.
  • Full Screen scroll
    – The chart scrolls a full screen at a time. The chart scrolls from left to right, starting at the left of the chart. When the pens reach the right side of the chart, the chart scrolls the entire screen and the pens plot values again, starting at the left side of the chart. Use this scrolling option with overlays.
Display scrolling mechanism
Determines whether a mechanism to allow manual scrolling is shown with the chart. Use the VCR-style buttons to scroll through trend data. The buttons allow operators to scroll backward and forward through data and to toggle between pausing and resuming automatic scrolling.
Buffer for extra data
Sets the number of extra data points outside the display area that are stored for the operator to view by manual scrolling. When the buffer is full, old data drops off. The buffer size is limited to 32,767 data points per pen. To set the buffer size, specify the number of extra points to retain for each pen.
Scrolling is faster when data points are held in the buffer, however, larger buffer sizes require more system resources. If you notice slow runtime chart performance, you may want to reduce the number of data points held in the buffer.
