Configure a RAS server

  1. In Windows NT Explorer, right-click the
    Network Neighborhood
    icon and select
    Properties
    .
  2. Under the
    Services
    tab, make sure
    Remote Access Service
    and
    Simple TCP/IP Service
appear. If they do not appear, click
    Add
, and select each of them from the list, and click
    OK
    .
  3. Select
    Remote Access Service
    and click
    Properties
    to display the
    Remote Access Setup
    window.
  4. Select the appropriate RAS device. If no RAS device is available, click
    Add
    and configure the device.
  5. Click
    Configure
    and select
    Dial out and Receive Calls
    .
  6. Return to the
    Remote Access Setup
    window and click
    Network
    .
  7. For Dial out Protocols and Server Settings, select
    TCP/IP
    and click Configure.
    TIP:
If a DHCP server is not available, a range of IP addresses can be given to a RAS server for assignment to clients. The range must be valid for the subnet the RAS server is in. Type the beginning and ending addresses of the range in the appropriate box. You must assign at least two IP addresses, one for a remote client and one for the network adapter on the RAS server.
  8. Return to the
    Remote Access Setup
    window and click
    Continue
    .
  9. Open the Control Panel and select
    Services
    .
  10. The following options should be Started and Automatic:
    • Remote Access AutoDial Manager
    • Remote Access Connection Manager
    • Remote Access Service
    • Simple TCP/IP Service
  11. Assign dial in access from Remote Users by clicking the
    Start
    menu and selecting
Programs > Administrative Tools > Remote Access Admin
to assign dial in access from Remote Users.
  12. On the
    Remote Access Admin
    on \\computername menu bar, select
    Users
    and
    Permissions
    .
  13. Select the
Grant Dial In Permission to User
check box to give the selected user dial in permission. This is the name of the user that will be dialing into the Server machine. You can give everyone permission by clicking the
    Grant All
    check box. The
    Grant Dial In Permission
dialog box also shows if you are connected by checking the number of ports and active ports.
IMPORTANT:
After configuring RAS server, you must reinstall NT Service Pack 3 for RAS to work. Also, if the server machine does not have a separate network card configured with a valid IP address, you must first install an MS Loopback Adapter and assign it an IP address via TCP/IP protocol.
