Plan system and install software
This section describes the main planning steps for setting up .
FactoryTalk Alarms and Events
as part of a network distributed application. For information on how to plan for either a network station application or a local station application, see the Chapter Plan your System
in the FactoryTalk Alarms and Events
System Configuration GuidePlan a system
When deploying
FactoryTalk Alarms and Events
as part of a network distributed application, consider which types of alarm monitoring you plan to use:- Device-based alarm monitoring. Set up device-based alarm monitoring to obtain alarms fromStudio 5000controllers using built-in alarms or alarm instructions.
- Server tag-based alarm monitoring. Set up tag-based alarm monitoring to obtain alarms from a data server.
- OPC UA alarm monitoring. Set up OPC UA alarm monitoring to obtain alarms from a third-party OPC UA server.
The type of monitoring you use determines which software you install and activate. This can include
FactoryTalk View
, FactoryTalk Linx
, RSLinx Classic
, and Logix Designer
application. For more about the software products in a . For specific software installation and activation instructions, refer to each product's installation guide.
FactoryTalk Alarms and Events
deployment, see the Chapter Plan your System
in the FactoryTalk Alarms and Events
System Configuration GuideIf you are using device-based alarm monitoring, check the
Studio 5000
controller firmware. The firmware must be revision 16.20 or later (excluding 21 to 23) to use built-in alarms or alarm instructions.Install software
- InstallFactoryTalk Services Platformon every computer that participates in aFactoryTalknetwork distributed application--with the exception of database servers.
- InstallFactoryTalk View Studioand theLogix Designerapplication on the computer where you develop the network distributed application.
- To log historical alarm and event information to a database, installSQL Serverseparately, if you do not already have it installed. Follow the instructions in the ChapterSet up historical alarm and event loggingin theFactoryTalk Alarms and EventsSystem Configuration Guide.
- To useFactoryTalk Alarms and Eventswith a local station application as part of a stand-aloneFactoryTalksystem, install all software on the same computer.
- To useFactoryTalk Alarms and Eventswith a network station application, install all software on the same computer, with the exception of data servers. A network station application can access data servers hosted on other networked computers.
Example: Network distributed application on distributed computers
This diagram shows an example of a possible network layout for a group of computers and which software products are installed on each computer that is participating in
FactoryTalk Alarms and Events
using a FactoryTalk
Network Directory. Use this diagram only as a starting point; your own distributed system will vary.
