Set up device-based alarm monitoring
Use device-based alarm monitoring with
Studio 5000
controllers that have been programmed using pre-built alarms or alarm instructions. If your FactoryTalk
application uses other types of controllers, set up server tag-based alarm monitoring.Overview: Set up device-based alarm monitoring
- Create a project, define alarms or alarm instructions, and download to aStudio 5000controller.
- Add aRockwell AutomationDevice Server (FactoryTalk Linx) to an application to organize project information, including elements such as data servers, HMI servers, and alarm and event servers, and make the information available to all software products and computers participating in aFactoryTalksystem. The following application types can be used for device-based alarm monitoring.
- Network distributed applications, held in aFactoryTalkNetwork Directory.Project information and participating software products can be located on multiple computers distributed across a network. All of the computers participating in a particular network distributed application share a common Network Directory Server located on a network computer.
- Network station applications, held in aFactoryTalkNetwork Directory. All participating software products (except for data servers) must be installed on the same computer. Network station applications can connect to data servers that are located on different machines. All of the computers participating in a particular network station application share a common Network Directory Server located on a network computer.
- Local station applications, held in aFactoryTalkLocal Directory.Project information is located on a stand-alone computer and is available only to software products installed on that same local computer. Local station applications cannot be accessed remotely and cannot share project information with a network distributed application or network station application.
Step 1. Create a project, and define alarms or alarm instructions
- Run theStudio 5000Logix Designerapplication.
- Create a project and add the new alarm or alarm instructions. For step-by-step instructions, see the Logix Designer application Help.
- When complete, download the project to the controller.
Step 2. Add a device server to an application
Use either
FactoryTalk View Studio
or FactoryTalk Administration Console
and add a Rockwell Automation
Device Server (FactoryTalk Linx
) to a local or network application in the FactoryTalk Directory
. Set up the device server to subscribe to alarms detected by the Studio 5000
controller. The steps below apply to adding a device server using
FactoryTalk View Studio
.- InFactoryTalk View Studio, open or create aFactoryTalkapplication.
- Expand theFactoryTalkExplorer window to show the contents of theFactoryTalkNetwork Directory orFactoryTalkLocal Directory in a tree view. Navigate to the application or area where you want to add the server.
- Right-click the application or area, and then clickAdd New Server>.Rockwell AutomationDevice Server (FactoryTalk Linx)
- In thePropertiesdialog box, set the device server properties, and then clickOK.
- In the Explorer window, double-click theFactoryTalk Linxserver, and then double-clickCommunication Setup.
- In theCommunication Setupwindow, add a new shortcut to theStudio 5000controller and enable alarms and events for the shortcut. When you finish, clickOK.
