controllers. When you create a new controller the value of the Expansion I/O is blank. In the New Controller dialog box, select 0 Modules from the Expansion I/O list if you do not know the number of local input and output modules for the new controller. Once the controller is created, modify the Expansion I/O selection on the General tab in the Controller Properties dialog box.
To configure the Expansion I/O in the Controller Properties dialog box:
- On the General tab, select the number of physical input and output modules for the controller from the Expansion I/O list. For example, if you are planning to add two Expansion I/O modules for the controller, select 2 Modules from the Expansion I/O list.
- Next, add the new Expansion I/O modules using the I/O Configuration tree, right-click Expansion I/O and then select New Module to open the Select Module dialog box.IMPORTANT:The value in the Controller Properties dialog box for the Expansion I/O must match the number of physical input/output modules or the controller cannot connect to any local input/output.
In this example, there are two Expansion I/O modules.

When the controller's I/O Expansion selection does not match the actual number of physical modules present:
- the controller does not make any I/O connections when online
- a module fault is displayed when onlineIMPORTANT:A correctPOINT I/Osystem does not have any empty terminal bases. Going online with mismatched I/O settings can potentially cause unintended control in the system.
