Secure networks and devices

To browse or secure control hardware accessible to the computer from:
  • FactoryTalk Linx
    — use the
    Communications tab
    .
  • RSLinx Classic
    — use the
    Networks and Devices
    tree in the
    FactoryTalk Administration Console
    Explorer
    or use
    RSWho
    in
    RSLinx Classic
    .
In
FactoryTalk Administration Console
, by default, security supports centralized administration by associating security permissions with network relative paths that point to physical control networks and devices. A relative network path uses a network as a starting point and ends with the target network or device. The name of the network corresponds to the
RSLinx Classic
driver name.
As an alternative, the security system also allows defining a logical name as an alias to a path, and associating security permissions directly with the name, rather than with the path. Because
RSLogix 5000
controllers are identified by logical device names and not by relative paths, define a logical name in
FactoryTalk Administration Console
that maps to the controller's device name.
When using a logical name to set security permission for a device, define the logical name on each computer on the network that has access to the device. This allows the device to use the permissions associated with the logical name.
