What does a yellow question mark in the Communication Setup editor mean?

If a hardware device's icon shows as a yellow question mark (Yellow question mark) on the communications tree in the
Communication Setup
editor, it may indicate one of the following:
  • An icon is not available for the hardware device
  • FactoryTalk Linx
    cannot recognize the hardware device
An icon is not available for the hardware device
If a yellow question mark (Yellow question mark) shows on the communications tree in the
Communication Setup
editor, it may indicate that an icon is not available for the hardware device you selected. As long as the device's name shows on the
Available Devices
list, it is supported by
FactoryTalk Linx
.
FactoryTalk Linx
cannot recognize the hardware device
If you insert a hardware device that is not on the
Available Devices
list, a yellow question mark shows on the communications tree in the
Communication Setup
editor. The hardware device does not have an associated device description file installed, and therefore cannot be recognized by
FactoryTalk Linx
. In this case, the Device Name is blank. To resolve this condition, use the Device Description File Installation Tool to register the proper device description file, and then browse the communications tree once more in the
Communication Setup
editor.
TIP:
  • Some hardware devices, such as PCCC devices, do not have device description files and therefore do not support manual registration in the Device Description File Installation Tool.
  • Some hardware devices, such as
    Micro800
    series devices and
    PanelView Plus
terminals, require a patch (or a new release) of
    FactoryTalk Linx
that adds support for the new hardware devices. These devices cannot communicate with
    FactoryTalk Linx
merely by manual registration in the Device Description File Installation Tool.
