Add an alias (RIO configuration)
Add an alias to assign a user-specified identifier (alias) to each data point in an RIO configuration. Refer to
Alias Properties dialog box settings
for a full description of each setting.To add an alias to a data point in your remote I/O configuration
- From theCommunication Setupeditor,right-clickon the RIO scanner and clickConfigure RIOto open theRIO Configurationdialog box.
- Click+to expand the rack.
- Click+to expand the group.
- Right-clickonInputs, then clickAdd Aliasto display theAlias Propertiesdialog box.
- Enter a uniqueNamefor the data point. Names are case-insensitive, have a maximum of 254 characters, and can use any character except: @, :, /, [, ], ., comma, or space.
- Choose theAlias Data Type.
- Choose theStart Word. This is dictated by the rack and group address and range. Some data types have specific requirements, as detailed inAlias Datatypes.
- (optional) Choose theBitif you selected the bit, bit array, or byte data types. Specify the bit offset within the word in which the data point is located.
- (optional) Choose aLengthfor unsigned word, string/array, and bit array data types only. Specifies the length of the data referenced by the data point.
- (optional) If theBitArraydata type is selected, choose aBit Length(from 1-32).
- Specify the user-definedInitial Valueof the data point.TIP:No validation checking is performed to ensure you have not initialized an overlapped variable with a different value somewhere else.
- ClickOverlapsto display theAddress,Type, andAlias Nameof any overlapping aliases.TIP:The RIO configuration tool does not ensure that you have not configured overlapping aliases.
- When you are finished, clickOKto close theAlias Propertiesdialog box.
