Syslog Destination Setup settings

How do I open FactoryTalk Diagnostic Configuration?
  1. Log on to the
    FactoryTalk
    Network Directory or
    FactoryTalk
    Local Directory.
  2. In
    FactoryTalk Administration Console
    Explorer, expand
    System > Policies > System Policies
    .
  3. Right-click
    FactoryTalk Diagnostics
    , and then select
    Properties
    .
  4. In the left pane of the
    FactoryTalk Diagnostic Configuration
    dialog, expand
    Diagnostic Setup
    , and then select
    Syslog
    .
The following table shows the Syslog Destination Setup settings.
Syslog Collector or Relay

Host
Specifies the IPv4 address, IPv6 address, or the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the computer hosting the Syslog collector.
Port
Specifies an available port. The port range is from 1 through 49151. The default port is 514.
Protocol
Selects the communication protocol.
  • TCP
  • UDP (default)
Enable framing characters
Determines if the message is octet counted or delimited by trailing characters. It is only available when TCP is selected.
Trailing
Sets the trailing characters. Available options are as follows:
  • Carriage Return + Line Feed
  • NULL
    (default)
  • Line Feed
  • Carriage Return
It is only applied when
Enable framing characters
is selected.
Message Buffering

MB of storage to buffer
Configures the storage size to buffer messages when the configured Syslog Collector cannot communicate with the local computer. The default size is 100 MB. The value range is from 10 through 5000. Changing the buffer size will affect all computers, and reducing the size could potentially remove messages stored in the buffer.

Shows the number of messages that can be cached using the buffer size. The FactoryTalk system will automatically calculate the approximate number of messages.

Typically, this option is assigned to messages that confirm the success or failure of an action initiated by people who are operating or using the
FactoryTalk
product or service.
Engineer
Typically, this option is assigned to messages useful to control system designers, application engineers, and administrators for testing and troubleshooting
FactoryTalk
products and services.
Developer
Typically, this option is assigned to messages useful to systems software developers for testing and troubleshooting software components and subsystems.
Secure
Reserved for messages which need to be protected and retained based on specifications for storing electronic records, such as US FDA 21 CFR Part 11.
Severity options
Severity
Description
Error
Typically, this option is assigned to the most serious kind of error message, triggered by significant problems.
Warning
Typically, this option is assigned to messages triggered by problems that are not necessarily critical, but which may cause future problems.
Information
Typically, this option is assigned to messages that document the essential purpose of the
FactoryTalk
product or service, and which supplement and add more detail to "Audit" messages.
Audit
Typically, this option is assigned to messages that indicate user activities which are essential to the technology or purpose of the product or service. Note that, Audit messages with this severity are not generated if the audit policy called "Audit changes to configuration and control system" is disabled. Use FactoryTalk Administration Console to configure audit policies.
Beginning with FactoryTalk Services Platform version 6.50.00, these messages with the Secure audience and Audit severity can be routed to:
  • FactoryTalk AssetCentre log
  • An ODBC database
  • A Syslog Collector
Mapping
Configure the mapping of FactoryTalk Diagnostic audience message category to Syslog Facility Code. The available Syslog Facility Codes include User-level, Local0, Local1, Local2, Local3, Local4, Local5, Local6, and Local7. Syslog collectors use the Facility Code and Severity to calculate priority.
