Configure communications timeout
The
OPC communications timeout
area allows you to configure
the FactoryTalk® Batch
Server’s watchdog timer.To configure the
FactoryTalk Batch
Server's watchdog
timer- OpenFactoryTalk Administration Consoleand sign in to theFactoryTalkNetwork Directory.
- InFactoryTalk Administration ConsoleExplorer, do one of the following:
- For a newFactoryTalk BatchServer, right-click the application or the area name and select .
- For an existingFactoryTalk BatchServer, expand the application or the area name, right-click the server, and selectProperties.
- In theFactoryTalk Batch Services Propertiesdialog, select theGeneralorSecondary Servertab.
- In theOPC communications timeoutarea, in thePeriod (msec)box, enter the watchdog timer setpoint.ThePeriod (msec)box allows you to define the time interval (in milliseconds) that the primary or secondaryFactoryTalk BatchServer uses to check the quality of communication withFactoryTalk Live Dataand OPC servers and to attempt to reconnect logic in the case of lost data server connections. The default value is10,000msec.
- In theAllowable failuresbox, enter the Set/Reset retry maximum.TheAllowable failuresbox allows you to define how many consecutive failed watchdog set or reset periods that the primary or secondaryFactoryTalk BatchServer permits before aFactoryTalk Live Dataserver or OPC data server connection status is marked BAD and batches using that data server respond according to their configuredHold propagationtype. The default is5.IMPORTANT: When the watchdog times out in the PCD, the PLI should be designed to set the Phase Failure Tag to a nonzero value that represents an understandable message in the Phase Failure Enumeration Set such asPCD1 Batch Watchdog Timed Out.TIP:Therecommended configurationfor Batch watchdog and PCD watchdog is that the PLC watchdog timer setpoint must be configured to have a value that is5 % or lessof thetotalvalue of theFactoryTalk BatchServer watchdog timer’s period value and allowable failures value.Example:If the server’s watchdog timeout period is set to 10000 milliseconds (10 seconds), and the allowable failures is set to 5, then set the PLC watchdog timer setpoint to 47500 milliseconds (47.5 seconds):.95 (5 x 10000) = 47500
