Connect FactoryTalk Design Studio to FactoryTalk Remote Access

FactoryTalk Design Studio
uses a custom
FactoryTalk Remote Access
user named
FTDS
to communicate to on-premises devices through
FactoryTalk Remote Access
endpoints. To confirm this user’s configuration, see Enable FactoryTalk Remote Access for FactoryTalk Design Studio. Access to the Build and Deploy Center requires the Engineer role. To change communication configuration, a
FactoryTalk Design Studio
Core entitlement is required.
Connect
FactoryTalk Design Studio
to
FactoryTalk Remote Access
once the
FactoryTalk Remote Access
configuration is complete.
  1. On the top toolbar, select Deploy icon to open
    Deploy center
    .
    TIP: You can also select
    Deploy center
    at the bottom of the
    Devices
    explorer.
  2. On
    Deploy center
    , in the
    Path
    column, select , and then select
    Set controller path
    .
    The list of drivers on this screen is common to all users and all
    FactoryTalk Design Studio
    projects in your
    FactoryTalk Hub
    organization.
  3. In
    Set device path
    , select .
    The
    Configure Drivers
    dialog appears.
  4. In
    Configure Drivers
    , do the following:
    1. In
      Available Driver Types
      , select
      FactoryTalk Remote Access (VPN)
      .
    2. Select
      Add New
      .
    The
    Change the VPN Endpoint
    dialog appears and shows the
    FactoryTalk Remote Access
    endpoints that have
    FTDS
    user permissions assigned to them.
  5. In
    Change the VPN Endpoint
    , select the
    FactoryTalk Remote Access
    endpoint or device to which you want to connect, and then select
    OK
    . The on-premises controller must have a network connection to this endpoint to be visible to
    FactoryTalk Design Studio
    .
  6. In
    Configure VPN
    , do one of the following:
    • Set
      Discovery Method
      to
      Device List/Range
      , and then add a specific IP address or range of IP addresses in the
      Device List/Range
      field.
    • Set
      Discovery Method
      to
      Broadcast
      . Broadcast discovery finds all available controllers connected to the selected endpoint.
  7. Select
    OK
    to add your new endpoint.
  8. Select
    Close
    .
    Your new endpoint appears in the
    Set device path
    list and is available to all projects within your organization.
  9. Right-click the endpoint, and then select
    Connect
    .
    An active connection to the
    FactoryTalk Remote Access
    VPN endpoint is established and a list of all available controllers connected to that endpoint appears.
  10. Once connected, expand the list to see available controllers.
  11. Highlight the controller whose path you want to set, and then select
    OK
    .
FactoryTalk Design Studio
is configured to communicate through your
FactoryTalk Remote Access
endpoint, and you’ve set your on-premises controller path.
