Add an I/O Device to a Safety Controller
Safety I/O devices provide pulse test and monitoring capabilities. If the device detects a
failure, the failed input or output is assigned to the safe state and is reported to the
safety controller.
You can add a safety I/O device that is assigned to a controller or as unassigned. When a
safety I/O device is unassigned, the Safety Network Number (SNN) of the unassigned device is
removed until you assign the device to a controller. See Safety Network Number (SNN).
TIP:
A validation error shows if you add a safety device to
a standard controller.
TIP:
You can add local safety I/O devices to the backplane
of the safety controller. You can add remote safety I/O devices by adding a remote adapter
to the Ethernet node (for example, catalog number 5069-AENTR or 1756-EN2TR), then add safety
I/O devices to the backplane of the adapter.
- In Devices explorer, right-click the Ethernet bus or backplane and select Add Device.TIP: You can also right-click Unassigned and select New Device, or select
Hamburger Menu and select New Device. When you add a device that is unassigned, the devices that are listed in the Add Devices dialog are not necessarily compatible with your project or safety controller.
- In the Assign Devices To dialog, under Category Filter, select Safety.TIP: When you add an I/O device directly to the backplane, the Catalog list shows only devices that are available for you to add to that backplane.
- Select the catalog number and use Devices to add section on the right to increase the number of that device to add to the project.TIP: When the backplane is full, there are no available devices to select. You can adjust the number of devices to add to the project or use the trash can to delete devices.
- Select Continue. The Assign Devices to Project window opens with the selected devices that are listed in the Pending to Configure area.
- Under Pending to Configure, enter the device name and slot number.
- Select Finish to add the devices. The devices appear in the Devices explorer.
