Short Circuit Detection/Protection

Short Circuit Protection helps prevent damage to the output that can result when more current is present at the output than it can handle.
When a short circuit condition is detected, the following occurs:
  • The output turns off.
  • The I/O status indicator for the output flashes red.
  • The
    I.Ptxx.ShortCircuit
    tag is set to 1.
IMPORTANT:
For 5034-UB8F only: For PWM operation, the short circuit diagnostic may not be reported if the output On time is less than 1 millisecond.
When the short circuit condition is removed, the following occurs:
  • The output restarts in its commanded state.
  • The I/O status indicator for the output follows the commanded state (off or steady yellow).
  • The
    I.Ptxx.ShortCircuit
    tag is reset to 0.
  • If PWM is enabled, the
    I.Ptxx.ShortCircuit
tag is reset to 0 after no short circuit condition is detected for one cycle time.
For more information on the maximum current that you can apply to an output, see the PointMax I/O System Specifications Technical Data, publication 5034-TD001.
