Managing User Roles and Access

Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) identifies the access permissions to capabilities based on roles.
Access to capabilities in
FactoryTalk® Design Studio
is based on the role that is assigned to the user. The roles are:
  • Guest
  • Engineer
  • Safety Engineer
  • Administrator
IMPORTANT: You must have a Safety Engineer role to access safety tools and functions or change any safety content in
FactoryTalk® Design Studio
. Validation errors occur if an unauthorized user attempts to change safety content. You cannot commit the project or deploy any applications to any controllers when unauthorized safety changes are present.
Access the User Management console from the Help menu on the top right of the user interface Help menu.
Either:
Select Help menu and then select User Management.
or
Select Help menu Welcome and then Open User Management.
See the following table for a list of capabilities and the access permission according to the user role.

IMPORTANT:
To provide additional layers of protection to safety content and functions, you can restrict access to safety functionality. You can only do the following if you have the correct permissions.
  • Edit safety content
  • Generate a safety signature
  • Delete a safety signature
  • Lock a safety controller
  • Unlock a safety controller
These permissions are available to the safety engineer role, or can be granted individually in a custom role. See Managing user roles and access in the FactoryTalk Design Studio Online Help for more information about roles and permissions.
IMPORTANT: The role assigned to you in
FactoryTalk® Hub
determines whether you can be an Administrator in
FactoryTalk® Design Studio
. Within your
FactoryTalk® Hub
organization, you must have either the admin role that is assigned at the organization level, or at the
FactoryTalk® Design Studio
service level, to be recognized as an administrator in
FactoryTalk® Design Studio
. You cannot modify this role from the
FactoryTalk® Design Studio
User Management screen.
