Overview

This course covers basic metalworking techniques used to shape and modify metal workpieces. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of rough and precision layout, sawing, filing, reaming, tapping, deburring, and broaching. Additionally, the course explores how to remove broken studs and cut threads by hand and machine using a threading die and tap as well as the operation of powered keyway cutters.

   Perform a rough layout of a workpiece.

   Perform a precision layout of a workpiece.

   Describe how to saw stock with a hand hacksaw.

   Describe the correct procedure for straight and draw filling of metal.

   Describe the correct procedure for sizing holes with hand reamers.

   Describe the correct procedure for tapping threads by hand.

   Describe hand methods of deburring parts.

   Describe hand methods of removing broken studs.

   Describe the correct procedure for cutting threads by hand using a threading die and tap.

   Describe the correct procedure for broaching a keyway using an arbor press.

   Explain how the operate a powered keyway cutter.

   Describe the correct procedure for cutting threads by machine using a threading die.
