The PointMax™ I/O architecture provides a wide range of input and output modules to span many applications, such as machine, hybrid, and process control. The architecture uses Producer/Consumer technology that allows input information and output status to be shared among multiple Logix 5000® controllers. PointMax I/O systems are used as remote I/O modules with Logix 5000 controllers. You configure the modules with the Studio 5000 Logix Designer® application.

Space optimization features for maximum design freedom include:

  • Single-slot safety module reduces the control panel size
  • No more calculations for module power simplifies I/O configurations
  • Field power feeding through the backplane eliminates the need for an extra Field Potential Distributor (FPD) module

A linear network topology is a collection of devices that are daisy chained together across an EtherNet/IP™ network. Devices that connect to a linear network topology use embedded switch technology to remove any need for a separate switch, as required in star network topologies.

A star network topology is a traditional EtherNet/IP™ network that includes multiple devices that are connected to each other via an Ethernet switch. The controller can operate in linear/DLR or Dual-IP mode when it is connected to a star network topology.

If the controller operates in Dual-IP mode, the Ethernet ports have unique IP configurations and must be connected to different subnets.

A DLR network is a single-fault tolerant ring network intended for applications that require high-speed convergence and single fault recovery for continuous operation. This topology is implemented at the device level and provides a means to detect, manage, and recover from single faults in a ring-based network.

For more information about DLR, see the EtherNet/IP™ Device Level Ring Application Technique, publication ENET-AT007.

Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) Chevron DownChevron Down

PRP provides high availability in Ethernet networks. PRP technology creates seamless redundancy by sending duplicate frames to two independent network infrastructures, known as LAN A and LAN B. If a failure occurs in one of the LANs, traffic continues to flow through the other LAN uninterrupted with zero convergence time.

For more information about PRP, see the EtherNet/IP™ Parallel Redundancy Protocol Application Technique, publication ENET-AT006.
