Course Purpose

This course provides you with an overview of the various FactoryTalk® Historian tools for collecting data. Throughout the course, you will learn how to configure a FactoryTalk Historian Site Edition system, modify FactoryTalk Historian tags, how to apply exception and compression to filter data to be archived. Also, you will be given an opportunity to compare the use of Polled versus Advised data collection modes. Data buffering, layers/methods of redundancy, archive management and backup and visualization of the Asset Framework Data within Pi Vision will also be covered.

Your instructor will demonstrate how to perform all the tasks covered in this course. You will then be given an opportunity to practice these tasks using a procedure guide and Virtual Machine images designed to simulate a real production facility.

After completing this course, you should be able to understand and configure a FactoryTalk Historian system, including:

  • Create a FactoryTalk Historian Server connection
  • Import tags to FactoryTalk Historian Server
  • Understand and use Exception and Compression
  • Configure FactoryTalk Historian SE High Availability

Individuals who need to understand how to use various FactoryTalk Historian tools to collect data should attend this course.

Prerequisites

To successfully complete this course, the following prerequisites are required:

  • General understanding of basic Automation concepts
  • Knowledge of your production environment
  • Experience navigating Rockwell Automation and FactoryTalk enabled software

Technology Requirements

All technology is provided for student use in the classroom by Rockwell Automation. It is not necessary for students to bring any technology with them when attending this course.

To enhance and facilitate the students’ learning experiences, the following materials are provided as part of the course package:

  • Student Manual
    • Includes the key concepts, definitions, examples, and activities presented in this course.
  • Lab Book
    • Provides learning activities and hands-on practice. Solutions are included after each exercise for immediate feedback.
  • FactoryTalk Historian Procedures Guide:
    • Provides step-by-step instructions for tasks that are common to all FactoryTalk Historian systems

Certificate Assessment

Access to the certificate assessment is valid for 90 days from the end of class and will be provided by email.

Hands-on Practice

Throughout this course, you will have the opportunity to practice the skills you have learned through a variety of hands-on exercises. These exercises focus on the skills introduced in each lesson.

To complete the exercises, you will have access to a virtualized computer environment designed to simulate a production facility. You will practice designing the system, configuring the software, and troubleshooting common production issues.

Because the basic skills taught in the course apply to all software platforms, you can then apply what you have learned to the specific platform that you use in your plant.
