About session expiration

FactoryTalk ViewPoint
uses session expiration to automatically release client connections in case a user has unexpectedly disconnected or is away for an extended period.
A session expires when:
  • The web browser does not respond to a status ping within the client connection timeout period.
  • The user does not change or refresh the display within the inactivity timeout period.
When a session expires, the web browser displays "Session has expired". To reconnect to the
FactoryTalk ViewPoint
server, the user must refresh the web page and sign in again.
Status Pings and Session Timeout
By default, the
FactoryTalk ViewPoint
client sends a status ping to the web server once every 10 seconds. If the web server does not receive the status ping within the client connection timeout period, the session is ended. The client connection timeout period is 30 seconds.
Common causes of client connection timeouts are network failure, unexpected power loss, or an application crash.
Inactivity Timeout
By default, the
FactoryTalk ViewPoint
server has an inactivity timeout of 20 minutes. If a user does not change or refresh a display within the inactivity timeout, the session expires.
Specify the inactivity timeout settings on the
Server Settings
page.
