Peer-to-peer Safety Communication

Peer-to-peer safety communication between safety-enabled controllers is possible via the
EtherNet/IP
network or across the
ControlLogix®
backplane. The controllers can control and exchange safety data with safety I/O devices on an
EtherNet/IP
network, via the onboard Ethernet ports or
EtherNet/IP
bridges.
IMPORTANT: A remote
GuardLogix®
or
Compact GuardLogix®
controller that has firmware earlier than revision 28 cannot consume data from a
GuardLogix®
5580 or
Compact GuardLogix®
5380 controller. Older consumer controllers must be updated to at least to firmware revision 28, or use a dedicated, separate
EtherNet/IP
module in the same chassis as the
GuardLogix®
5580 controller, making a connection for produced/ consumed tags that bridges through the Logix backplane. See Knowledgebase Article .

TIP:
Peer-to-peer safety communication between two safety-enabled controllers or I/O modules in the same chassis is also possible via the backplane.
