Configure Module Properties Connection tab parameters

Use this tab to define controller-to-module behavior. On this tab:
  • Select a requested packet interval.
  • Choose to inhibit the module.
  • Configure the controller so that a loss of connection to this module causes a major fault.
  • View module faults.
    TIP: The data on this tab comes directly from the controller. This tab displays information about the condition of the connection between the module and the controller.
To configure Module Properties dialog box Connection tab parameters
  1. Enter the requested rate of packet arrival (connection update rate). The connection moves data to or from the module at least this often.
    The minimum and maximum RPI values show parenthetically to the right of the control.
    These minimum and maximum values are module-dependent and differ depending on the limits of the module. For instance, for the 1756-DM and
    PowerFlex
    700s Drive modules, valid values range from 2.0 through 100.0 ms.
    The Owner Controller(s) of a module determine the RPI. If establishing a Listen Only connection, the RPI for that connection cannot be faster than the fastest RPI configured for all owner controllers (for input modules), or faster than the RPI configured for the one owner controller (for output modules).
    ATTENTION: Changing the RPI while online temporarily disables the connection and may result in a loss of data.
    • The RPI for the CNB module affects only the CNB Rack Object.
    • This field does not apply for all motion modules (for example, 1756-HYD02, 1756-M02AE, 1756-M08SE, and all 1394- and Ultra3000 modules).

ATTENTION:
For a remote module using scheduled ControlNet - if the RPI is changed online, the connection to the module breaks until a re-run to schedule the network. Breaking the connection may result in a loss of data.

For modules in remote racks, when communicating on a ControlNet network, set the RPI to no faster than 2 ms.
  1. Select or clear
    Inhibit Module
    to inhibit or uninhibit the connection to the module. Inhibiting the module breaks the connection to the module.
    A FLEX I/O module using rack communication cannot be inhibited; the
    Inhibit
    check box on the
    Connection
    tab is unavailable in this case.

    Inhibiting the module breaks the connection to the module and may result in loss of data.
When selecting this box and going online, the icon representing this module in the controller organizer displays the Inhibit Icon.

Stop communication to a module.
  • If inhibiting the module while online and connected to the module, the connection to the module closes. The module's outputs go to the last configured Program mode state.
  • If inhibiting the module while online with no established connection to the module (perhaps due to an error condition or fault), the module is inhibited. The module status information changes showing that the module is Inhibited and not Faulted.
  • If uninhibiting a module (clear the check box) while online, and no fault condition occurs, the module connects and reconfigures dynamically (if this is the owner controller) with the module's created configuration. If in a Listen Only Communications Format, re-configuring the module is not an option.
  • If uninhibiting a module while online and a fault condition occurs, the module does not connect.

    Major Fault on Controller if Connection Fails
    to configure the controller so that failure of the connection to this module causes a major fault on the controller.
    TIP: This check box is automatically selected and enabled for the CompactBus Virtual Backplane adapter and all 1769 I/O modules that are children of the virtual adapter.
  2. Select
    Use Scheduled Connection over ControlNet
    to explicitly schedule the network connection. Enabled when the connection for the module crosses ControlNet and the module supports Unscheduled connections.
    Selected and unavailable when the connection to the module crosses ControlNet, and the module does not support unscheduled connections. Therefore, schedule the connection.
    Cleared and unavailable when the connection to the module does not cross ControlNet, or the connection crosses ControlNet but does not need to be scheduled.
  3. Use Unicast Connection over EtherNet/IP
    is enabled by default. Clear the check box for Multicast connections.
    WARNING:
    ATTENTION:
    Changing between a Unicast and Multicast connection while online causes the connection to the module to close and re-open.

ATTENTION:
If the module path crosses ControlNet, the connection to the module is unavailable until a restart to reconfigure the network.
WARNING:
ATTENTION:
Changing to a Multicast connection fails to reconnect with the module if the connection crosses multiple subnets. Multicast connections are limited to one subnet.

    Enable Automatic Diagnostics
    to automatically send the module's device diagnostic condition updates to applications and client devices supported by
    FactoryTalk Alarms and Events
    .
    TIP:
    Enable Automatic Diagnostics
    is supported only on
    CompactLogix
    5380,
    ControlLogix
    5580,
    Compact GuardLogix
    5380, and
    GuardLogix
    5580 controllers.
Module Fault
displays the fault code returned from the controller (related to the configured module) and the text detailing the module faults.
Common categories for errors:
  • Connection Request Error -
    The controller attempts to make a connection to the module and receives an error. No connection made.
  • Service Request Error -
    The controller attempts to request a service from the module and receives an error. Unsuccessful performance of service.
  • Module Configuration Invalid -
    Invalid configuration in the module.
  • Electronic Keying Mismatch -
    Electronic Keying enabled and some part of the keying information differs between the software and the module.

Normal
