FactoryTalk Directory

FactoryTalk Directory
enables the parts of an application to locate each other on a computer or on the network.
FactoryTalk Security
provides security for the resources managed by
FactoryTalk Directory
. You can set up
FactoryTalk Security
to restrict such things as who can open, modify, and delete an application or area, and who has access to the
FactoryTalk Directory
from which computers. For example, to access graphic displays on an HMI server in the application, HMI clients use
FactoryTalk Directory
to find out which computer on the network is hosting the HMI server.
FactoryTalk Directory
also stores the information about which users and computers are allowed access to the various parts of a control system if you have used FactoryTalk Security, to secure access to the resources that
FactoryTalk Directory
manages.
In a network system, if
FactoryTalk Directory
becomes unavailable while an application is running, the application will continue to run correctly. For example, the
FactoryTalk View SE
client will be able to read and write values, acknowledge alarms, and open and close displays because a copy of the information provided by
FactoryTalk Directory
is stored locally on each computer that is connected to the
FactoryTalk Directory
computer. However, while
FactoryTalk Directory
is unavailable, you cannot modify an application's structure; for example, you cannot add or edit an area, a data server, or an HMI server.
If you are installing
FactoryTalk Services Platform
on a computer for the first time with the standard FactoryTalk Directory mode:
  • In the
    FactoryTalk
Local Directory, all users have full access to the directory and to
    FactoryTalk View
    .
  • In the
    FactoryTalk
Network Directory, all users that are members of the
    Windows Administrator
group on any local computer that is connected to the
    FactoryTalk
Network Directory, will have full access to the directory and to
    FactoryTalk View
    .
If you are upgrading an existing
FactoryTalk
system that is earlier than version 5.10, whatever security you previously set up will continue to be in effect.
When you create a
FactoryTalk View SE
application, the user groups
Windows Administrators
and
Administrators
are created in the
FactoryTalk Directory
. Also, the group account
All Users
is added automatically to the FactoryTalk View Runtime Security accounts. By default, the
All Users
group is granted all
FactoryTalk View SE
runtime security codes (A - P), and all
FactoryTalk Security
actions at the root directory node.
TIP:
The
FactoryTalk Directory
server must not be installed on the same computer as the domain controller for the network.
All the computers participating in a distributed application share a common
FactoryTalk Directory
located on a network computer.
