What is a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) and how does it work?
A VFD is an electronic device that controls the speed and torque of an AC motor by regulating the frequency and voltage of its power supply. It converts AC power to DC and then back to AC at a desired frequency using pulse-width modulation.
What are the main benefits of using a VFD?
VFDs improve energy efficiency by matching motor speed to application load requirements, reduce mechanical wear with algorithmic speed control, and enhance process control for better production line productivity. With these capabilities, they can lower operating costs and extend equipment life.
How do I choose the right VFD for my application?
Selection depends on motor power, voltage, speed control range and application type (such as pumps, fans, conveyors). Also consider environmental conditions, power quality needs, and communication options. We recommend integration with automation systems like Studio 5000® from Rockwell Automation.
What are common issues with VFDs and how can they be resolved?
VFDs experience a range of different conditions as a result of being the primary device between the power grid and the rotating motor. They can experience overvoltage and phase-loss related faults when the power grid experiences faults or sags. They can also fault when a motor becomes overloaded or experiences a mechanical failure on parts such as bearings and stator windings.
