secondary topology
A network topology associated with the secondary
FactoryTalk Linx
server host workstation (
FactoryTalk View SE
Distributed).
severity
A value assigned to define the urgency of an alarm or event. Severities are assigned using
Logix Designer
when you are writing alarm instructions for a programmable controller.
shortcut
A symbolic reference to a physical device that you want to connect to on the network, and the data that device contains. The communication path associated with the shortcut tells the application where to find that data.
slot
The node address of a selected device on the network.
stand-alone computer
A computer that is not connected to a network.
syslog
Syslog stands for System Logging Protocol and is a standard protocol used to send system log or event messages to a specific server, called a syslog server. It is primarily used to collect various device logs from several different machines in a central location for monitoring and review. It allows separation of the software that generates messages, the system that stores them, and the software that reports and analyzes them. Each message is labeled with a facility code, indicating the software type generating the message, and assigned a severity level.
system folder
Part of a FactoryTalk Directory that contains a list of user, computer, and group accounts, passwords, action groups, system policy settings, system security settings, and alarm and event database definitions. Use FactoryTalk Activation Manager or FactoryTalk View Studio to manage the information held in the System folder.

tag
A named area of the process-connected device or controller’s memory where data is stored. It is the basic mechanism for allocating memory, referencing data from logic, and monitoring data.
TCP/IP port address
The address of a logical channel or channel end-point in a network communications system. Specify the address of a TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) port using the syntax: [port]@[host]
topology
The way a network is physically structured. This includes all networks, nodes, devices, Data Providers, drivers/channels, and object protocols. In
FactoryTalk Linx
, this is presented in tree form (the communications tree).

workstation
A powerful, stand-alone computer used in applications requiring considerable calculating or graphics capability. It is a combination of input, output and computing hardware that can be used for work by an individual.
