When I manually add a device to a configuration, what difference would selecting the wrong firmware make?

When I manually add a device to a configuration, I see that all possible revisions of that device are present. What difference would selecting the wrong firmware make?
The
FactoryTalk Linx
hardware list is derived from the EDS Subsystem library used by products such as
RSLinx Classic
and
RSNetWorx
to populate their lists. With respect to
FactoryTalk Linx
, the reason to retain multiple revisions is because those revisions comprise different connectivity options. For instance, a specific hardware revision may add a Serial Port that was previously not present. You should select the most recent revision of a product when adding it to a configuration.
