Diego Avilés is IT Director for Golden Omega, a producer of a high-quality Omega-3 concentrates. The company was the first to build an Omega-3 production facility in Latin America. Its state-of-the-art operations are in Northern Chile, near the South Pacific Ocean and its supply of high-quality fish oil.

“With that kind of quality raw material, we had to get the right processes in place,” Diego says. “Our main goal was to design a factory that would allow us to produce the quantities needed and grow into the future.”

Sole Supplier of Automation

Golden Omega selected Rockwell Automation as its sole supplier of automation and controls.

“It was a good decision that made things easier and has worked for us in the long term,” Diego explains. “When we first started 10 years ago, we had many different control, machine, and area level systems. Then we consolidated all of them into a single Distributed Control System (DCS). The whole package has worked as one solution that’s been easy to integrate.”

As part of its upgraded DCS, Golden Omega uses FactoryTalk® View Site Edition for visualization, Studio 5000 Logix Designer® for process and control, FactoryTalk® Historian as its main data repository, FactoryTalk® VantagePoint® for analytics, and FactoryTalk® AssetCentre for asset management. Additionally, Golden Omega follows CPwE (Converged Plantwide Ethernet) network standards, uses machine virtualization, and has an on-site micro data facility, all of which to reinforce cybersecurity.

“It’s a robust system and having a single source of technology has been a key success factor,” Diego says. “Now all of our efforts are focused on our DCS, and we’ve reduced system-related incidents to a minimum.”

Working Differently

He says one of the biggest changes with the DCS is the ability to monitor and manage production remotely from multiple points in and outside of the plant. It’s a capability that was helpful during the pandemic when in-person contact was limited.

“The way we work now is different. With visibility to the whole plant, we’ve been able to empower our workforce and improve productivity,” Diego says, “They have more control and are able to do more than they could before.”

Golden Omega has also merged its IT and OT organizations into a single team sharing knowledge, experience and skills to accelerate digital transformation and innovation. Working with Rockwell Automation, the team plans to explore opportunities in predictive maintenance, enhanced analytics, and advanced cybersecurity.

Training is Essential

Diego says that continuous training has been essential to Golden Omega’s digital transformation.

“Key for our journey was having a strong team and attending Rockwell Automation technical education events,” he says. “We learned a lot about the technology that we are using. Don't ever stop learning and training your team.”
