Database definitions

A database definition is a single reference to a database where FactoryTalk Alarm and Event data is stored. A list of the user-defined database definitions (and their associated properties) is maintained in the FactoryTalk Directory. From this list, you can specify a different database definition for each alarm server in the
Database Connection Properties
dialog box.
A database definition specifies the connection information for a database and creates the required database objects.
When using a database definition from within
FactoryTalk Administration Console
or
FactoryTalk View Studio
:
  • Ensure that you have the proper
    FactoryTalk Security
permissions to add, edit, and delete database definitions.
  • Each database definition is stored in the
    FactoryTalk Directory
and can be shared across multiple alarm servers in your system. Database definitions are similar to data source names (DSNs) in that they define attributes necessary to connect to a database. However, unlike DSNs, database definitions also include additional properties and attributes.
  • Each alarm server specifies the database definition that will be used.
  • Both the Archiver service and the
    FactoryTalk
Alarm and Event Log Viewer are consumers of the database definition.
