Secure RSLogix 5000 devices
RSLogix 5000
devices obtain their security permissions only from logical names. A RSLogix 5000
device does not obtain security permissions from its position in the path through the Networks and Devices tree (network relative path). However, a RSLogix 5000
device can inherit security settings from the Networks and Devices node itself. RSLogix 5000
devices cannot, however, inherit security settings from any level between
the Networks and Devices node and the device itself. Although assigning security settings inside the Networks and Devices tree is possible, the settings are ignored by any RSLogix 5000
devices.To secure
RSLogix 5000
devices- Map device names to logical names. BecauseRSLogix 5000controllers are identified by built-in device names, and not by network relative paths, map each device name to a logical name before configuring security. Assign security to a logical name in order to secure aRSLogix 5000device. If defining security settings for aRSLogix 5000device in the Networks and Devices tree and the device has no logical name associated with it, the security settings are ignored.Map device names to logical names two ways:
- In the Networks and Devices tree. Use this option security settings were not imported from RSSecurity Server, and the device appears in the Networks and Devices tree.
- In the Resource Editor. Use this option if security settings were imported from RSSecurity Server and theRSLogix 5000device does not appear in the Networks and Devices tree.
- Assign security permissions directly to aRSLogix 5000device in the Networks and Devices tree after mapping the device manually to its corresponding logical name. In this case, any changes made to security settings for theRSLogix 5000device are automatically made to its corresponding logical name. If the logical name is undefined later, two sets of security settings for the device may exist: one set that is specific to the device in the Networks and Devices tree (this set is ignored by aRSLogix 5000device), and one set that is specific to the logical name (this set is used by aRSLogix 5000device).
- To make aRSLogix 5000device inherit its security permissions from an application or area, add the device to a resource grouping by assigning the logical name to an application or area. This makes the logical name inherit its security permissions from the application or area rather than from the Networks and Devices tree, the System folder, and then the network or localFactoryTalk Directory.
If security settings were not imported and the device does not appear in the Networks and Devices tree, the device is not accessible to the computer.
