Remove the Hidden Costs with a Native Cloud Solution

What you spend on a cloud computing solution can vary greatly, especially if there are hidden fees or costs that go unnoticed. Read our blog to understand what these are.

When it comes to deploying IT and OT solutions, spending can become as great a limiting factor as space, storage and data. The operational costs of running a cloud environment can quickly rise. This presents a universal challenge. If the cost of running these solutions becomes greater than the benefits they offer, it becomes a very easy decision to discontinue the project and redirect resources elsewhere.

One particular area in which manufacturers might see costs surge, relates to hidden costs. As the name suggests, these costs can emerge unexpectedly, with on-premises solutions racking up escalating bills that eat into the bottom line. For manufacturers to fully realize the advantages provided by a native cloud solution, they must begin by understanding how these platforms help to remove unseen costs from the outset.

Predictable Outcomes, Predictable Costs

The comparison between a native cloud solution and an on-premises option offers several key advantages, with predictability being a top priority. The term ‘predictability’ encompasses a broad spectrum, depending on specific goals or intended results.

Native solutions offer predictability regarding the licenses being used throughout a cloud system. There is also the predictability as it pertains to scalability, whereby companies can effectively and easily scale from a very small instance of cloud usage to a very large one, with full knowledge and confidence that the solution will perform as expected. This prevents any unforeseen expenditure that might be needed to harmonize disparate solutions.

Predictability also extends to security. A native cloud solution guarantees very high levels of security with a dedicated team managing that security at each stage in the adoption and utilization process. This mitigates the cost of having to fix or patch breaches as and when they arise, adding to the expense.

Visibility of Expenditure

No one likes having to pay more than the price they were expecting. This principle applies just as much in life as it does in business. Added costs and hidden fees will quickly cause people to lose faith in a product, or at least can tarnish their initial opinion. The same is true with a cloud solution.

When using a native cloud-based system, manufacturers can have full visibility into the total cost. The worry of hidden costs associated with an on-premise solution – which typically relates to elements such as hardware, version maintenance, upgrade paths – is mitigated by opting for native alternatives.

These areas that hidden costs usually stem from – which most customers don’t necessarily consider when first considering a solution - are incorporated directly into the subscription cost of a native cloud solution, eliminating the threat of costs escalating.

Continued Cost-Saving in the Cloud

As organizations grow using a native cloud solution, there are ongoing cost savings they can realize. The key areas here include:

  • Obviating the need to add new physical servers over time
  • Eliminating the requirement for additional hardware
  • Avoiding concerns over licenses or upgrades
  • Preventing the need to purchase additional physical space to house new servers.

The benefits bolster the capabilities of a cloud solution and will also support IT teams - and wider units within a company – to work more effectively. A native cloud-based solution will help de-risk many of the issues that could occur which an IT team will have to face on a regular basis, freeing them up to tackle more challenging, complex or value-added jobs.

Instead of an IT team having to spend the majority of their day maintaining versions or handling patches, a cloud-based solution can handle this automatically, and with a much-reduced risk of error.

It is crucial for manufacturers to understand the uptime required to keep a cloud solution operating effectively. This starts with understanding what is included in the cloud solution, and working closely with a provider who can offer security and scalability in a cost-effective manner, before even considering implementation. Otherwise, the risk of hidden costs will quickly grow and threaten the overall effectiveness of moving to the cloud in the first place.

Native as the New Way Forward

When a native cloud solution is deployed effectively, organizations encounter highly predictable costs that can be accounted for with a greater degree of precision, in contrast to on-site alternatives that often involve hidden costs associated with hardware servers.

Native solutions are also gaining favor because they do not require extensive support from IT staff, who may not be able to keep up with the constantly changing and emerging security threats. It also means that the struggle with constant upgrade cycles is removed, meaning teams can spend more time, resources and money in areas of higher impact, improving the quality and ROI that the cloud can bring to an organization.

As more companies look to adopt this strategy, it’s clear that native cloud solutions will become the preferred mode of operating, with on-premises solutions falling out of favor. The risk of hidden costs is a key driver for this evolution.
