Deploy a project

Deploy a project to a physical controller or an emulated controller.
An emulated controller represents your controller in emulation instead of on physical hardware. In
FactoryTalk Design Studio
, an emulated controller runs in the cloud or on premises.
Use the emulated controller to work with controller logic in
FactoryTalk Design Studio
without connecting to a physical controller. This approach lets you validate project behavior while keeping the physical controller definition in the project. Multiple users can connect to the same emulated controller in a project, enabling concurrent work, monitoring, and troubleshooting.

To physical controllers and on-premises emulated controllers

Use
FactoryTalk® Remote Access
with
FactoryTalk® Design Studio
.
FactoryTalk Remote Access
provides a virtual private network (VPN) connection from
FactoryTalk Design Studio
in the cloud to controllers and devices on the plant floor. Use
FactoryTalk Remote Access
to configure an endpoint that connects with
FactoryTalk Design Studio
.
Access
FactoryTalk Remote Access
from
FactoryTalk Hub
. See User roles and access for more information about permissions.
IMPORTANT: When you deploy a project to one or more controllers, all controllers remain in Program mode. The controllers remain in Program mode until you go online with each controller and set the mode to Run. You can go online with one controller at a time.

To cloud-hosted emulated controllers

When a controller is added to the project, the cloud-hosted emulated controller becomes available as a deployment target. Initialization can take up to two minutes, which starts upon the first deployment to the emulated controller.
If no users connect for a period of time, the emulated controller pauses and retains its state. When users reconnect, it resumes from the saved state, with larger projects taking longer to become available.
Deleting the controller from the project deletes the emulated controller.
