Device Definition
Use the settings on the Device Definition dialog to:
- Define the device revision.
- Select the electronic keying.
- Configure the connections to the device.
Parameter | Description |
|---|---|
Name | Enter an IEC 61131 compliant device name. If an invalid character is entered in this field, or if the name exceeds 40
characters, the software ignores the character. |
Description | Enter the description of the device. The description must be within 128 characters. If the description exceeds
the maximum length, the software ignores any extra characters. |
Ethernet Address | Enter the IP address of the device |
Revision | Set Major Revision to 2 if the connection with the current FLOWave Revision
should be established. FLOWave manufacture dates 06/2025 or later default to Revision 2. Set Major Revision to 1 if you want to connect with Revision 1 FLOWave. This is
necessary for devices older than the manufacture date of 06/2025 or newer devices
with Compatibility Mode set to Revision 1. Set Minor Revision to 1. |
Electronic keying | Defines the electronic keying used for the device. Electronic keying compares the
device defined in the project to the installed device. If keying fails, a fault
occurs. Valid values include:

Configuration | Enter "Yes" if device-specific data configured in "CONFIGURATION" menu should be
downloaded to the device during connection establishment. Enter "No" if no configuration device-specific data should be downloaded to the
device during connection establishment. |
Process Packages | Enter the Package, which is compatible with the FLOWave. If the incorrect Package
is selected, it is possible that invalid or insufficient data will be
displayed. For example, the Standard Measurement Package does not include data for Density,
Mass, or Concentration measurement. If your FLOWave has one of these functions,
please select the corresponding Package. The following Packages and their associated cyclic data are available: Standard:

Electronic Keying
Electronic keying reduces the possibility of using the wrong device in a control system.
Electronic keying compares the device defined in the project to the installed device. If
keying fails, a fault occurs.
Attribute | Description |
|---|---|
Vendor | The device manufacturer. |
Device Type | The general type of the device, for example, digital I/O device. |
Product Code | The specific type of device. The Product Code maps to a catalog number.

Major Revision | A number that represents the functional capabilities of a device. |
Minor Revision | A number that represents behavior changes in the device. |
Keying Option | Description |

Compatible Module | Lets the installed device accept the key of the device that is defined in the
project when the installed device can emulate the defined device. Typically, use
Compatible Module to replace a device with another device that has these
characteristics:

Disable Keying | Indicates that the keying attributes are not considered when attempting to
communicate with a device. With Disable Keying, communication can occur with a
device other than the type specified in the project.
CAUTION:
Use extreme caution when using Disable Keying. If used incorrectly, this
option can lead to personal injury or death, property damage, or economic
loss. We strongly recommend not using Disable Keying. If using Disable Keying, take full responsibility for understanding whether the
device being used can fulfill the functional requirements of the
application. |
Exact Match | Indicates that all keying attributes must match to establish communication. If
any attribute does not match precisely, communication with the device does not
occur. |
Carefully consider the implications of each keying option when selecting one.
IMPORTANT:
- Changing Electronic keying parameters online interrupts connections to the device and any devices that are connected through the device. Connections from other controllers can also be broken.
- A loss of data may occur if an I/O connection to a device is interrupted.
