ControlLogix 5590 Functional Safety

The Safety Integrity Level (SIL) is a discrete level for describing the capability to perform a safety function where SIL 3 has the highest level of safety integrity and SIL 1 has the lowest.
The following table provides the SIL and Performance Level (PL) standards for the controllers:
  • The safety-enabled controller performs standard controller functionality and communicates with the safety partner to perform safety-related functions.
  • The safety partner works with the safety-enabled controller to perform safety-related functions in a SIL 3 system.

TÜV Rheinland has approved
ControlLogix®
5590 safety-enabled controller systems for use in safety-related applications where the de-energized state is considered to be the safe state.
All I/O examples in this manual are based on achieving de-energization as the safe state for typical machine safety and emergency shutdown (ESD) systems.
IMPORTANT: As the system user, you are responsible for these items:
  • The setup, SIL rating, and validation of any sensors or actuators that are connected to the
    ControlLogix®
    5590 safety-enabled controller system.
  • Project management and functional test.
  • Access control to the safety system, including password handling.
  • Programming the application and the device configurations in accordance with the information in this user manual.
When applying functional safety, restrict access to qualified, authorized personnel who are trained and experienced.
Use programming software for
ControlLogix®
5590 safety-enabled controllers. Only the safety task, not standard tasks, can be used for safety functions.
