A Great way to catch up on the convergence of science, technology and culture making the news, all in 30 minutes. Just right for my early morning walk with the dog, previously a “go to” on work journeys!
Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action (Simon Sinek)
A book I came across via a TED talk video (so good I bought the book!). in a very simple, short way it demonstrates how organizations can inspire their people to be their best.
Being a fellow Teessider, I can’t not mention Athletico Mince – a humorous, often surreal, podcast by Bob Mortimer and Andy Dawson. Every episode makes me laugh out loud (so be careful if you are in public).
Humanocracy: Creating Organizations as Amazing as the People Inside Them (Gary Hamel & Michele Zanini)
An investigation into the ways in which companies will need to change the way they empower their workforce so that they encourage creativity and initiative for all employees, no matter what their role.
A podcast about making work better. A mix of interviews with a variety of guests, covering business and workforce trends and opportunities, and the way in which we could improve our workplace and jobs.
I was always aware of John Le Carre, but thought it was a little old fashioned. I was wrong. As per most good books, it’s all about human nature, so as relevant today as it was when it was written.
My brother gave me a copy of this he had finished years ago. I read it in a week and was hooked. I am a history fan anyway, so fiction with a bit of history is more often than not a winner!
If you like science and comedy, this one is for you. A beautifully explanation of science’s deep questions, with experts in the field paired with comedians, for a light-hearted look at some mind-boggling concepts.
Growing Great Employees: Turning Ordinary People into Extraordinary (Erika Andersen)
A quick read with some deep ideas. All about understanding differing team personality types and what drives them – and using that to create an engaging workplace with effective teams and communication.
Technology vs. Humanity: The Coming Clash Between Man and Machine (Gerd Leonhard)
This is a thought-provoking book, asking questions around how, as a society, we should utilise technology, What are the benefits? But also, what are the potential threats – both technologically and societally.
Great Demo!: How to Create and Execute Stunning Software Demonstrations (Peter Cohan)
A favourite of mine that I loan to all new technical consultants who join my team. It discusses ways in which to deliver complex messages in a clear way, and to focus on the customers and their requirements.
Of course, no list of mine would be complete without mention of Management Perspectives. I may be biased, being the host, but this is a great resource for any executive industrial decision-maker.
