Challenge
One of the largest oil and gas producers in Oman, operating facilities that extract around 66,000 barrels of oil per day, is also committed to minimizing its carbon and other emissions, and to helping Oman meet its obligations under the Paris Agreement.
To achieve these goals, the company had to find a way of improving the efficiency, the cost-effectiveness, and the emissions associated with the flaring of gas at its Khamilah oil field. As well as making the operation mechanically more efficient, the company aimed to recover more of the previously wasted gas, so that it could clean it of impurities and use it to generate power for Omani consumers.
This company also aimed to improve the safety and resilience of its operations, ensuring that any system for gas recovery and gas flaring was able to operate to the highest standards of precision and control.
Solution
To address these challenges, the oil and gas producer looked to industrial-systems specialists Multivista Oman, a Rockwell Automation partner, and Bronze OEM partner Flaroman, experts in flare-ignition and control equipment. Together, these two companies designed and installed an advanced flow-regulating and flare-control system.
The new system used the Allen-Bradley® ControlLogix® control system from Rockwell Automation. Integrated between the controllers and the I/O modules, this provided precision, performance and reliability, even in an extreme and hazardous environment.
With support from Rockwell Automation, the team designed, specified and deployed data-collection and reporting technology, integrated safety systems and redundant control systems. Together, these features enhanced not only the performance of the gas-flow and flare-control, they also increased its resilience and improved site safety.
Result
Using the new system, the company can now deliver recovered gas, which would previously have been wasted, to the national gas pipeline. This helps Oman meet the energy needs of its people and its industry.
The data collecting and reporting systems provide enhanced visibility and control, further improving operational efficiency. Early visibility of alarms and system events gives operators the intelligence and the flexibility to respond to changing conditions in a way that improves safety.
Improved emissions handling helped reduce the volume of greenhouse gas and unwanted byproducts released into this atmosphere. This is good for workers and for the environment. It also contributes towards Oman meeting its climate obligations.
The new system also enhances both productivity and safety by providing precision control for the crucial combustion system. So, when the site does have to flare gas, operators can do so with a far greater degree of control than before. This helps to ensure that the potentially hazardous operation of flaring proceeds safely and according to plan.
