In today's rapidly changing world, sustainability has become a pressing concern. Companies in the manufacturing space have a commitment to environmental responsibility and an understanding that it goes beyond the realms of their immediate surroundings, or its initial impact.

It’s important that manufacturers and machine builders combine forces to create and improve energy-efficient machines that help to encourage the use of sustainable, climate-neutral packaging materials. Embracing the principles of an environmental, social, and governance (ESG) approach helps manufacturers to drive sustainability throughout their entire organization, beyond decisions on raw material procurement or measuring machine emissions. But this mentality towards a more sustainable manufacturing and packaging sector is one that can only come from a commitment to effective collaboration.

The Power of Collaboration

At the heart of a packaging manufacturer’s sustainability journey lies collaboration. The first step for many will be recognizing that they cannot achieve sustainability goals alone, and therefore need support from close partnerships with industry experts. Both in terms of machinery and processes, but also for regulatory guidance.

Navigating these constantly changing regulations is difficult even for the most experienced of packaging providers. As the global response to climate change intensifies, regulatory changes are pushing for greater and greater changes to the status quo. The European regulations, such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), and potential future regulations from the SEC, emphasize the importance of ESG reporting, particularly in terms of scope one, two, and three emissions.

The Business Value Sustainability Brings to Companies
Have you questioned the actual business value that sustainability brings to companies? We hope that by the end of this article, you're going to think differently. There is unequivocal evidence that the earth is warming up at an unprecedented rate. The last five years have been the warmest on record. The Greenlands and the Arctic have lost 441 billion tons of ice per year since 1993, according to NASA.

By taking a proactive approach to comply with these reporting requirements and recognizing the significance of transparently measuring and monitoring the overall environmental impact, companies can make more effective, specific changes to their processes. By utilizing new technologies and applications that enable seamless collaboration, it becomes easier to meet these obligations, ensuring accurate reporting, and demonstrating continual improvement.

Strategic Focus on Sustainability

Sustainability should be viewed as a strategic imperative throughout the entire organization of packaging companies. A commitment of this kind has to extend beyond just the factory floor and the existing operations, into all departments. It needs to be factored into all strategic conversations, be that emphasizing the use of energy-efficient drives, utilizing a variety of different materials, or fully embracing automation technology and digital transformation.

To truly make a difference, it is about the entire ecosystem in which a company operates, including suppliers and value chain partners, to make sustainability efforts more impactful. Scope three emissions is an example of where this focus can be placed. These emissions encompass the entire value chain, including suppliers, and play a crucial role in sustainability targets. By setting clear objectives such as becoming Climate Neutral by 2030 in scope one and two emissions, as well as achieving a 50% reduction in scope three emissions, companies can strive for comprehensive sustainability across all operations, rather than just the obvious ones.

Unleashing the Power of Collaboration
Learn the three core principles that underpin Rockwell Automation’s partnership approach and how these serve as win-win outcomes for all members of the PartnerNetwork.

Seamless Integration of Sustainability and Productivity

Technology plays a vital role in our sustainability journey. One example is the innovative energy management applications, which provide contextualized energy data, allowing companies to measure, monitor, and improve the energy consumption of their machines. This real-time data empowers them to make informed decisions and report accurate energy usage information for ESG reporting. Additionally, digital twin technology has opened new avenues for reducing energy consumption and improving sustainability. Through virtual redesigns, training, and commissioning, resource-intensive processes and unnecessary carbon emissions can be mitigated if not eliminated entirely.

We firmly believe that sustainability and productivity can go hand in hand. The partnership between TPG and Rockwell Automation exemplifies this approach, as it seamlessly integrates sustainable outcomes with improved bottom-line performance. By embracing innovative solutions like digital twin technology, we have witnessed not only sustainability benefits but also increased productivity and operational efficiency. This holistic perspective drives our organization forward, ensuring long-term success and a reduced carbon footprint.

In today's dynamic world, driving sustainability requires collaboration, innovation, and a shared vision for a greener future. We understand that implementing sustainable practices is a holistic endeavor that demands the dedication of every team member, from designers and software engineers to mechanics on the shop floor. Through ongoing collaboration with our suppliers and customers, we are confident that our joint efforts will lead to even greater success for companies across the entire manufacturing industry.
