RA EtherNet/IP Driver communication

Configure
RA EtherNet/IP Driver
communication by specifying routing formats for Logix controllers and enabling block reads for efficient data transfer.

Configuration

To establish communication with a Logix controller, specify the
Route
property of the corresponding
Station
object in the following format
IP_Address
\Backplane\
Chassis_Slot_Number
.
The 1756-CMEE Embedded Edge Compute Module supports the following format
Backplane\
Chassis_Slot_Number
to access the controller tags directly from the backplane, without the EtherNet/IP connectivity.
TIP: When using the 1756-CMEE and starting the route with
Backplane
you cannot perform an Online import.
To configure routing that involves multiple Logix controllers, use the following format
IP_Address
\Backplane\
Port
\
Address
\Backplane
Chassis_Slot_Number
. If needed, repeat the
Port
\
Address
part.
TIP: Use
FactoryTalk® Linx
to browse the network and determine the
Route
value.
In the following example, the
OptixPanel™
reads tags from the Logix rack 2 CPU and the
Route
property of the
Station
object has the following value
192.168.1.10\Backplane\2\A\192.168.2.3\Backplane\0
.

their respective Ethernet modules (192.168.2.1 and 192.168.2.3).

Block reads

Block reads allow a block of data to be read from the controller instead of reading individual tags or data points. This allows for more efficient reading of larger datasets such as arrays and data structures. To reduce network traffic and provide faster data transfer, Rockwell Automation recommends block reads for arrays and larger data structures such as UDTs. By default, block reads are disabled for the RA Ethernet/IP Station controller.
If the RA Ethernet/IP Station controller has a large structure or array to read, enable block reads. In
Project view
, select the
RA Ethernet/IP Station
controller, and then in
Properties
, set
Enable block reads
to
True
. This enables block reads on tag structures that support block reads.
TIP: You can disable block reads on individual tags to not have the tag read using a block read. In
Project View
, select the
RA Ethernet/IP Station
controller, expand
Tags
and
Controller Tags
, select the tag, and then in
Properties
, in
Enable block read
, select
False
.
Certain tags do not support reading blocks of data. If you enable block reads for a tag that cannot read blocks of data, a message appears at runtime indicating that you must set
Enable block read
for the tag to
False
.
