Safety Level

The safety level declares the intent of the safety application. The safety level indicates whether the application is at safety level SIL 2/PLd or SIL 3/PLe.
  • The safety level that is required for an application is based on a required risk assessment that you must perform.
  • The safety level that is achieved is determined by conformance to Safety Integrity Level (SIL) and Performance Level (PL) requirements and safety application requirements.
  • For
    GuardLogix®
    5580 and
    ControlLogix®
    5590 controllers:
    • You must specify the safety level in the Safety Level dropdown menu. The default setting is SIL2/PLd.
      IMPORTANT: For
      ControlLogix®
5590 controllers, Standard Control Only is also available. When you change the controller to this level, errors occur and you must either remove the safety task or set the controller to a safety level.
    • You can only modify the setting offline.
    • For SIL 3/PLe, you must have a safety partner that is installed to the right of the primary controller. If you select SIL 3/PLe, two slot positions are taken: one for the safety controller and one for the safety partner. The Safety Partner Information tab of the Device profile of the safety controller is present when the safety controller is online (see Figure 1).
  • For the
    Compact GuardLogix®
5380 controllers, the safety level is fixed and determined by the catalog number.
