Add a Safety Controller

Add a safety controller to develop a safety application. Add controllers from the Devices explorer.
  1. On the explorer bar, select Devices Icon Devices.
  2. In the Devices explorer, select Hamburger Menu Icon Hamburger Menu, then select Add device icon New device. The Add Device to Project dialog opens.
  3. Under the Category filter select either:
    • The Controller filter, then select the safety controller from among all the controllers.
    • The Safety filter, then select the safety controller from among all the safety devices..
  4. Select a safety controller from the list and then select Continue.

  5. Under Pending to Configure, enter the controller information and then select Finish to add the safety controller to the device list.
    TIP: Controller names:
    • Can contain up to 40 valid characters.
    • Can contain only alphanumeric characters and underscores.
    • Must begin with a letter or underscore.
    • Cannot include consecutive underscores.
    • Cannot end with an underscore.

    TIP: Additional options to add a controller include:
    • Device List, at the top of the Device List, select Add Device icon Add Device.
    • Execution explorer Execution icon. Select Hamburger Menu IconHamburger Menu, and then select Add Controller. In the Add Controllers to Project dialog, select a controller from the catalog list.
    • Assigned and Unassigned folders. Right-click on the folders and select New Device.
The controller appears in the Devices explorer.
TIP: When you add a safety controller,
FactoryTalk® Design Studio
creates a safety application with the same name as the safety controller. See Configure the Safety Application.
